What People Are Saying

“Jordan, Sonja and the Holdfast team genuinely care about kids-you can feel it in how they coach, and in the way they take a personal interest in each one. Both of my sons attended summer camp, which was packed with games and activities alongside real, serious instruction. The kind of mentorship they offer goes way beyond technique. Jiu Jitsu has done a lot for our family-the physical discipline and stamina my boys have developed are just part of it. It’s a great community and we’re lucky to be a part of it.”

“Holdfast Grappling has become an important part of my family’s life. The coaches are fantastic, patient, and genuinely passionate. I completely trust them with my kids, who have a blast as they learn important life skills. I highly recommend HF to any parent looking for a quality program for their little ones!”

Former Client

“Our daughter trained with the kids program at Holdfast Grappling last summer, and it was one of the best decisions we made for her. From day one, the coaching staff created an environment that was structured, disciplined, and incredibly supportive. They hold the kids to a high standard while still making it fun and engaging-which is not an easy balance to strike. I was stoked to see the confidence our daughter gained and how excited she was to show me her moves every night when I got home.

Highly recommend for any parent looking to build both skill and character in their child.”

Our Team

Sonja Kontra

Hi-I’m Sonja, a lifelong Alaskan, mom to a beautiful and kind hearted 9 year old girl, wife to my best friend of 20 years and coffee lover. I am a dedicated youth instructor and community organizer committed to helping children grow through movement, discipline, and creativity.

Through teaching tap dance lessons and kids jiu jitsu, I create engaging environments where young people can build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self. I also lead jiu jitsu camps that emphasize teamwork, respect and personal development, giving kids the tools they need both on and off the mat.

Beyond instruction, I actively support afterschool programming and organize community events designed to bring kids and families together in positive, welcoming spaces.

At home, I homeschool my daughter and spend as much time as possible outdoors with my family, embracing all that Alaska has to offer.

My work is centered on creating meaningful experiences that empower young people, strengthen families and build a connected, thriving community.

“I’ve been in Homer for the past three years and after visiting my father-in-law in 2022, my husband and I realized Alaska was where we wanted to settle down! We love the beautiful beaches, trees, and snowy landscapes which perfectly blend our hometowns while offering a fresh new start.

I’ve held previous positions in childcare and customer service, where I genuinely enjoy helping others. In my free time, I love playing with my four cats, exploring all that Homer has to offer, and practicing Jiu Jitsu with my husband and the many friends we’ve made there. I’m excited about the opportunity ti bring my positive energy, patience, and caring attitude to all our campers!
